I love film. It’s my passion, my hobby, my job. I create, and with creating; I enlighten, not just myself but the viewer.
I knew that I wanted to make films from an early age. I used to be fascinated by my Dad’s old video camera. I couldn’t use it, but the sheer size and look of it just made me want to have a go.

Later on I used to play with my Grandfathers video camera, he is obsessed with filming family events. He used to let me, my brother and our cousins use it to make films. I think that’s where it started. I then went on to do more photography based things, I got a digital camera on my 17th birthday and that’s when I started learning about composition etc…

In sixth Form I took Film Studies as an A-Level. I loved studying the films, most notably the French New Wave style with films such as ‘A Bou De Souffle’, ‘Le Mepris’, ‘Jules et Jim’…  Of course, there were some films that we watched over and over again that they then bored us to death. I distinctly remember wanting to make a film, and finally my chance came with the final piece of coursework. We were given the choice to create a film and justify the visual styles or create a magazine with reviews. I knew I wanted to make a film, I had recently got a job and bought a nifty HD video camera made by Canon, I used this to film my piece. I wrote a script called Euphoria – It was about a man who used sex, drugs and alcohol to live a night of Euphoria. He doesn’t remember much of the night but flashbacks remind him of his murderous ways.

After completing Sixth Form I went on to apply to different Universities. I chose The University of Greenwich and couldn’t be happier. I’m in my third year, and I can firmly say I’ve learnt a lot from this course. I’ve learnt about using various cameras such as the digital Sony’s (V1, A1, NX5) we’ve had demonstrations on how to use a 16mm film camera, we’ve looked at a RED one, learnt how to use Final Cut, Adobe After Affects. My technical knowledge has grown, with the understanding of using various different types of lenses such as Prime (fixed Focal Length) lenses and zoom lenses, using F-Stops to allow for more light to get into the camera, allowing for a shallow depth of field. Playing around with exposure, frame rates, focus, sound, and various equipment that makes for a steady shot.

And after discovering the beauty of using DSLR’s that are capable of shooting video, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to tape based camera’s with fixed zoom lenses… Well, maybe thats a bit hasty, but, the price point for a Canon 550D and various lenses will set you back just over £1000. That’s less than a Sony V1. Although they don’t have many features with the stock firmware, upgrading to a Magic Lantern firmware will give your Canon DSLR a whole new set of features.

It’s not just shooting films I enjoy. I also love to write and come up with odd ideas that no body has seen yet and can possibly relate to. I love going to the cinema. I go at least once a week, if not more.

Life is good. :)
